I am new to the Coding world, preparing for the CPC exam. I have been searching for Coding jobs, and have come across a few ads for "Concurrent Coders". I have noticed the pay is very high. Obviously this is something I would not be qualified for YET. Can you tell me what this job is, and what kind of experience, education, and credentials one would need to qualify for this type of job?

Hi Becky,

Welcome!

I've never heard of "Concurrent Coder" position. Perhaps they mean among other duties you would also be doing coding?

Hopefully someone else will have a better idea.

Thank you Laureen! I'm curious. The pay was $60.00/hr. If I remember right, it was with a reputable company, otherwise I would think it was too good to be true. If this position does exist, it must require a lot of experience and education.

Ok now you got me curious so I ask the almight google god "What is concurrent coding" and I found a few hits.

Retrospective coding is done after the pt is discharged - the chart is reviewed and coded. Concurrent coding is when a coder goes to the unit while pt is still hospitalized, reviews the chart and codes. Many hospitals seem to be headed in this direction. The coder has more interaction with the clincial staff and can get documentation clarification easier.

The best article I found was here http://health-information.advanceweb.com/Article/Concurrent-Coders.aspx. It starts out rather humorus.

OF THE MULTITUDE OF soap operas set in hospitals, not one has ever featured a torrid romance between a doctor and a coder, a kidnapping plot hatched by a nurse and a coder, or a coder with an evil twin who terrorizes the medical staff. Plots like that are too unbelievable. Everyone knows that coders don't have that kind of contact with the medical staff!

Unless, of course, they are concurrent coders.

"Concurrent coding is reviewing patients' records during their stay and assigning the diagnostic and procedural codes at that time," explained Eve Van Sickle, RRA, director, health information services, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Cincinnati Burns Hospital. The practice has been in use for decades, but seems to have waned in popularity over the years. Some institutions, however, are still using concurrent coding programs and achieving excellent results. Still others have adapted and re-engineered these programs to suit their changing needs.

I had heard of it before but never remember it being called that. I had read it was not very popular but according to that article it's making a comeback. You just do coding as it's happening so no course needed - other than how to work with a physician that closely :)

Thank you Laureen! That was an interesting article. I loved the first part of it. I hope it's making a comeback. If it is, I want that job for $60/hr. I guess I had better get busy with the Blitz videos and get certified first. Lol!
